about
“I have an interest in living a healthy life, but I don’t have the time to research and navigate all of the information out there.”
If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place!
welcome to metabolic matters...
…your guide to helping you find ways to understand and build long-lasting health!
I’m Ann Nelson, and I’m excited to help you create true, metabolic health for yourself and your family – a health that ignites energy, fights disease, and helps prevent many common health problems.
We live in a time of unprecedented availability of information, which can be such a gift! There is so much available to help us learn how to live our best life. Podcasts, articles, studies, books, and Instagram stories all tell us how we can be healthy. There are new products, webinars, and tests that promise to magically “fix” us.
Amid this ocean of information, however, we often find contradictions and concepts we don’t understand, making it even harder to know what’s best for us. I know this because I’ve lived it!
i thought i was well-prepared...
…to guide my family’s health when I started having children.
I had spent most of my career in financial planning. I used to help people manage short-term and long-term financial goals and mitigate risk. I was pretty healthy myself, and I’d been professionally successful sifting through data to make wise decisions. I even left the workforce when my son was born to better focus my energy and skills on my family.
so i was stunned...
…when various health challenges arose in our family and extended family. We experienced autoimmune issues, sensory issues, food sensitivities, digestive issues, mold toxicity, and cancer. I spent countless hours trying to navigate a path through these goalposts. It was a time of confusion and overwhelm.
I found myself yearning for someone I could turn to for guidance.
I would have loved to ask questions like:
- “Can you help me understand the landscape around mold toxicity?”
- “What are the differing approaches for autoimmune disease and cancer?”
- “What is the difference between conventional and functional medicine?”
Because I didn’t have someone helping me, I ended up zigzagging around, seeing many doctors and wasting precious time. I remember waiting months to see a doctor for my daughter’s health issues related to mold exposure. I had researched and screened this office and was told they specialized in toxic mold illness. When we finally saw the doctor, we were told they believe mold is an allergen, and my daughter should see an allergist instead!
my journey has taught me...
…that there are certain areas where conventional medicine can fall short. Conventional medicine employs a siloed approach, dividing the body into separate parts for examination. As a result, whole-body issues like mold toxicity and autoimmune diseases are often misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or left untreated.
Fortunately, there is another toolkit available through functional medicine, which takes a root-cause approach. Functional medicine is based on metabolic health and the concept that the body is an interconnected system.
Metabolic health is the foundation of how your body functions at the cellular level, and there are pathways that connect the body in a beautiful symphony of actions. Metabolic health is the building block of health, enabling your body to produce energy, fight disease, and experience a vibrancy that helps prevent common health problems. It is through this lens that our family has been able to find help and resolve health issues over time.
my goal is to help you prevent disease...
…by being a guide for you. I aim to provide information, resources, and a framework that empowers you to become your own health advocate, so you and your family can successfully navigate and lead healthy lives.
To that end, I’ve been trained in Advanced Clinical Nutrition, with a focus in the areas of Therapeutic Nutrition, Hormones and Endocrinology, Digestion and Gastrointestinal (GI) Health; and Mental Health and Neurology. I also became certified as a Metabolic Terrain Advocate, which is aligned with Integrative Oncology and a Metabolic Approach to Cancer.
Between my specialized training and my experience with my own family, I’ve learned a lot about how to get and stay healthy.
I look forward to helping you!
